Rutger published: Arlington Man Arrested for Arson at Local LGBTQ+ Establishment

An Arlington man faces serious charges after being arrested for setting multiple fires at restaurants on South 23rd Street. Among these establishments is Freddie’s Beach Bar and Restaurant, a well-known LGBTQ+ venue. The Arlington County Fire Department confirmed the arrest on January 16, bringing a sense of relief to the community that had been on edge following the incidents.

The suspect, identified as Timothy Clark Pollock, was apprehended by Alexandria police early in the morning on January 16. According to a statement from the fire department, Pollock was taken into custody around 6:54 a.m. and subsequently transferred to the Arlington Police Department, where he awaits further proceedings. He is currently facing three counts of arson.

Authorities report that the fires occurred between 5 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on January 9. These incidents took place on the 500 block of South 23rd Street in the Crystal City area. Along with Freddie’s Beach Bar, the Crystal City Sports Pub and McNamara’s Pub and Restaurant were also targeted by the fires, which caused alarm but fortunately limited damage.

The Events Unfold

Freddie Lutz, the owner of Freddie’s Beach Bar, described the unsettling experience, noting that the front door of his establishment was set ablaze with what seemed to be a flammable substance like lighter fluid. Fortunately, the fire was contained to the door, leaving the interior of the bar unaffected.

Adding to the tension, Lutz revealed that Freddie’s had received threatening phone calls both before and after the fire was set. The calls, received by Freddie’s manager, included menacing messages from an unidentified male voice. "He said I’m going to harm you and the women," Lutz recounted, expressing concern that the caller might have been involved in the arson.

The arrest of Pollock brings some answers but also raises questions about his motives. The fire department’s brief statement did not specify any potential reasons behind Pollock’s actions. Pollock remains in custody without bond and faces additional charges unrelated to these incidents, which are still under investigation.

Community Impact

Freddie’s Beach Bar is more than just a restaurant; it’s a community hub for the LGBTQ+ population in Arlington and beyond. The attacks have left many feeling vulnerable but also have strengthened the resolve to stand together against acts of hate and violence.

The arrest has prompted discussions about safety and community solidarity. Many patrons and local residents have expressed their support for Freddie’s, emphasizing the need to protect spaces that serve as sanctuaries for marginalized groups.

Lutz, reflecting on the incident, remains hopeful about the future. "We won’t let fear dictate our lives," he stated, affirming his commitment to keeping Freddie’s a welcoming space for all.

Social Media Connection

Further intrigue surrounds Pollock’s connection to Freddie’s Beach Bar. The local news outlet reported a Facebook account associated with Pollock containing a photo taken inside Freddie’s. The image, posted in December, features the bar decorated for the holidays, suggesting Pollock had visited the venue before the arson incidents.

This discovery adds a layer of complexity to the case, as investigators continue to piece together Pollock’s motives and the potential significance of his visits to Freddie’s.

Looking Forward

As the investigation continues, the community remains alert yet hopeful. The incidents have sparked a dialogue about the importance of safe spaces and the resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in Arlington.

Freddie’s Beach Bar and other local establishments are taking steps to enhance security measures and reassure patrons while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere that defines them.

The outpouring of support from the community underscores the strength and solidarity that can arise in the face of adversity. While the road to healing may be long, the spirit of togetherness will guide Freddie’s and its patrons forward.

As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the reasons behind the arson and ensuring justice is served for the targeted establishments.
