Ariana Grande has voiced her support for the transgender community following a recent executive order issued by President Donald Trump. This order, which was signed soon after Trump began his second term as President on January 20, mandates the U.S. government to recognize only two genders: male and female. The move reverses previous trans-inclusive policies from former President Joe Biden’s administration.
By rolling back protections for transgender individuals, Trump’s new policy also stipulates that the term “gender” will be replaced by “sex” in federal documents. In his inaugural address, Trump asserted the existence of only two genders and declared his intent to put an end to what he described as government social engineering of race and gender in public and private life.
The acclaimed singer and actress, known for her role in Wicked, responded to Trump’s controversial stance by sharing a post from Advocates For Trans Equality on her Instagram. The message highlighted the challenges faced by the transgender community under the current administration and underscored the resilience and solidarity within the community.
The post read: “Today is a challenging day for our community. The incoming administration has consistently targeted trans people’s rights, healthcare, and dignity. We must remain vigilant against the actions these extremists may pursue.” It continued, “Regardless of what happens, we will stand together and protect one another. We have overcome significant battles in the past and will do so again.”
Ariana further engaged her audience by sharing a powerful statement from Matt Bernstein, a prominent influencer and podcast host. Bernstein’s message emphasized the enduring presence and resilience of queer and transgender people, regardless of political attempts to erase them. He poignantly remarked, “Let’s be very clear: queer and trans people existed long before Donald Trump and will continue to exist long after his presidency has ended.”
He added, “The world and its natural course are indifferent to political orders. The sun does not cease to rise because of an executive decree; it simply continues on its path.”
Ariana Grande’s advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights is well-documented. In 2019, she defended her fans during her Sweetener World Tour when an anti-gay protester attempted to disrupt the event. In response, she expressed regret that her fans had to face such hostility and praised them for maintaining peace.
At the time, she tweeted, “I am so sorry you had to experience this. Proud of you all for choosing not to engage in violence. It’s never worth it.” She reassured her fans, “He is vastly outnumbered. You are all celebrated, loved, and safe.”
Grande’s unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community has been a source of comfort and empowerment for many. Her actions and words continue to foster a sense of unity and hope among those advocating for equality.
