Anticipation Builds for Potential Second Season of Popular Gay Hockey Drama "Heated Rivalry"
Excitement is building among fans of the hit gay hockey drama series Heated Rivalry as the show’s creator, Jacob Tierney, suggests that a second season might be on the horizon. The series, which debuted on November 28, has quickly captured the hearts of viewers across Canada, the United States, and Australia, despite its limited availability. The show follows the intense and passionate relationship between two rival hockey players, Shane Hollander, played by Hudson Williams, and Ilya Rozanov, portrayed by Connor Storrie.
Fans of the series have flooded social media with praise, sharing their love for the dynamic chemistry between the lead characters and the compelling storytelling. Although initially available only in select regions, the show’s popularity has sparked discussions about broadening its reach. The enthusiasm online has not gone unnoticed by the show’s creators and producers, who are keenly aware of the growing demand for more episodes.
In an interview with Evan Ross Katz, showrunner Jacob Tierney expressed his surprise and delight at the overwhelming response to Heated Rivalry. "We did not expect this level of reaction to this show," Tierney stated, highlighting how the show has exceeded initial expectations. He admitted that he anticipated the series might garner a cult following over time, much like his previous work on Letterkenny, which took several seasons to gain traction. However, Heated Rivalry has defied those expectations by generating strong interest right from the start.
"This has been the complete opposite," Tierney remarked, referring to the show’s immediate success. He shared that there is significant enthusiasm among the creative team and decision-makers to continue the story of Shane and Ilya. "I can tell you there’s a lot of enthusiasm to do another season and I think it looks good, but I can’t announce anything," Tierney teased, keeping fans eager for an official confirmation.
Fans and creators alike are hopeful for a continuation, especially since there is a sequel book available in Rachel Reid’s Game Changers series, on which Heated Rivalry is based. This opens up opportunities for expanding the world and exploring new storylines and character developments. Tierney acknowledged the positive reception and hinted at the potential for further developments in the Heated Rivalry universe.
"It’s definitely not going unnoticed that the show is doing well and that people seem to be responding to it," Tierney commented, expressing optimism about the future. "And there’s a sequel book, right?" he added, pointing out the ample source material available for adaptation.
Beyond the storyline, the series is also noted for its representation and the performances of its lead actors, Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams. Tierney has been a vocal supporter of the actors, especially in the face of questions related to their personal lives and the ongoing conversation about queer actors playing queer roles. In a discussion with Xtra, Tierney stepped in to emphasize that casting decisions were based on the actors’ capabilities and passion for the project.
"I’ll answer this for them. I don’t think there’s any reason to get into that stuff," Tierney said, defending the privacy of his actors. "You can’t ask questions like that when you’re casting, right? It’s actually against the law." He praised both Williams and Storrie for their dedication and authenticity in bringing their characters to life. "They came into this being like, ‘Yeah, we’re here to do this, and we are here to make this story feel authentic and to be as real as possible.’ And they f****** hit it out of the park," Tierney added.
As fans eagerly await news of a second season, the impact of Heated Rivalry in fostering representation and telling compelling stories within the LGBTQ+ community cannot be overstated. With its unique blend of sports, romance, and drama, the series has carved out its own niche and continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
