Anheuser-Busch has taken a surprising turn by ending its long-standing sponsorship with St. Louis PrideFest, right in its own backyard. This unexpected move has left many festival organizers and locals in shock, trying hard not just with disappointment but in tackling this new challenge.
On March 25, Pride St. Louis shared their heartbreak. "It's devastating that our hometown brewer, Anheuser-Busch, won't sponsor PrideFest after more than 30 years. At a time when many sponsors have already pulled back, losing such historic support from our LGBTQIA+ community in St. Louis really stings," they noted.
Losing Anheuser-Busch's backing has blown a $150,000 hole in PrideFest's budget, which was already strained by other sponsors scaling back. It's a serious challenge that Pride St. Louis will now have no choice but face head-on.
Jordan Braxton, Director at Pride St. Louis, shared their personal hurt with KMOV. "After three decades, they decided not support us anymore," Braxton remarked. "It's painful, especially since we're all homegrown here in St. Louis."
What's going on here? Anheuser-Busch's decision mirrors its earlier step back from sponsoring San Francisco's 2025 Pride celebration. There's a pattern emerging. According Braxton, it seems like social and political tensions surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are a driving force. "The president's always talking about targeting those who challenge him, and DEI cuts are pretty impactful," Braxton observed.
Eric Rhiney, a marketing professor at Webster University, chimed in on what might be happening, speculating that Anheuser-Busch's main market isn't too fond its previous advocacy efforts, especially LGBTQ+ causes. A backlash was clear when a 2023 social media partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney stirred strong emotions—boycotts and protests against Bud Light, Anheuser-Busch's brand, followed.
In light sponsorship withdrawal, Pride St. Louis kicked off #45for45—a fundraiser aimed squarely at rallying community support and making sure their 45th annual festival doesn't miss a beat.
Local businesses aren't just watching from sidelines. Chad Fox, owner Rehab Bar and Grill, made a bold statement, "To support our LGBTQIA+ community, we're cutting Anheuser-Busch products. As a community, we face constant targeting, and while some corporations have led DEI efforts, Anheuser-Busch's decision feels like another attack on us."
In a similar vein, Greenfinch Theater and Dive intends donate 25% from sales Anheuser-Busch products Metro Trans Umbrella Group. They're holding an event on April 4th sell their remaining stock.
Anheuser-Busch's decision has sparked big discussions on corporate responsibility and support marginalized communities. With PrideFest nearing, locals are banding together find new resources after Anheuser-Busch stepped back.
The St. Louis community isn't letting this stop them. Pride St. Louis remains determined make sure their festival continues shine hope and joy LGBTQIA+ folks. The #45for45 initiative's gaining traction, and allies are stepping up, showcasing a unity and strength that's quintessential Pride.
