Andrew Swann's Inspiring Path: A Single Gay Man's Quest Toward Fatherhood

Andrew Swann has carried a dream in his heart forever: becoming a father. Living in England, he's a filmmaker by trade but nurturing and raising a child has always been his true calling. Of course, as a single gay man, his journey hasn't been a walk in a park. It's been a winding road filled with hurdles.

Pursuing a dream: Becoming a dad

Andrew once imagined he'd be a father by 40, but now at 44, he's still chasing that dream with unflappable determination. Life's thrown plenty his direction, yet he's unwavering in what he describes as more than just a goal. "I've always wanted this," he confides. "Being a dad feels like it's a fundamental part who I am."

He found himself at a crossroads after a breakup a while back. Realizing he couldn't keep waiting on Mr. Right, Andrew decided it was time. He dove headfirst, learning all there was about surrogacy and egg donation. "Didn't need a partner," he reflects, "to go after my dream."

Surrogacy and egg donation: A journey like no other

Andrew likens finding a surrogate, oddly enough, with online dating. He spent a lot time connecting with others—gay, straight, you name it—to find support and, hopefully, a surrogate. "It comes down finding that right match," he says with conviction.

Discovering he carried cystic fibrosis brought him down a different path, choosing gestational surrogacy. This avenue let him pick an egg donor free from that condition, thus sparing his future child from it.

Finding just-right egg donor was no easy feat. "I wanted someone who met medical needs and shared zest life," Andrew recalls. He struck gold with a donor whose heartfelt message at end her profile touched him—she was open meeting any child she'd helped bring life. That signaled something special.

In England, egg donation's a non-commercial affair; donors aren't paid beyond procedural expenses. So Andrew knew his donor moved by pure kindness. He ended up with 13 eggs, yielding five viable embryos.

The waiting game: Finding a surrogate

For now, Andrew's still on quest linking with a surrogate. "It's a test patience and resilience," he admits. "Last year I thought I'd found one through social media, but didn't pan out. You can't take it personal."

He understands surrogates make tough calls, given many hopeful parents out there. "It could take months, maybe years, before right person appears," he accepts, "but I'm in this all. No turning back."

Even with a surrogate, Andrew's aware more obstacles await. Successful surrogacy might need repeated tries.

Holding strong: A father's dream

Despite everything, Andrew's spirit remains unshaken. "Doing this solo can be overwhelming," he confesses. "No partner share joys or decisions. Yet, thinking I'd not give my all? That's worse than anything."

In his heart, Andrew knows he's meant be a dad. "I'll move heaven and earth," he vows, "I won't give up on this dream."

Andrew's journey continues, brimming with hope and grit. He's ready meet fatherhood's triumphs and trials head-on, whenever that moment comes.
