"I've been wanting reach out because, after all, she's a human being," Thompson said. "I imagine she's dealing with a lot backlash. But, I've got my frustrations too—with what she's done and how it's cast a shadow over our sport."
Thompson also took her feelings public on social media, calling this episode one her career's most draining. “What should've been a celebrated moment has been overshadowed by scandal and dishonesty, all brought about by someone we welcomed,” she wrote. She emphasized how vital it celebrates women's sports without societal pressures getting in.
