Rutger published: Analyzing Recent U.S. Executive Orders: Impacts on the LGBTQ+ Community

Ever since he took office on January 20th, former President Donald Trump signed numerous executive orders that stirred up quite a bit, especially among those who follow LGBTQ+ rights closely. A lot were seen as a direct hit against transgender folk, reversing strides made by earlier leaders.

Rethinking sex and gender in government policy

One early move by Trump was an order that strictly recognized only two genders: male and female. Officially called "Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth," it stated all government papers must mark gender based on birth. This wiped out options like "X" on things like passports or driver licenses, which didn't sit well with many.

The order also demanded that any talk supporting "gender ideology" be scrubbed from federal messaging. Understandably, LGBTQ+ groups and their allies weren't having it, seeing this as erasing trans and non-binary folks' existence and rights.

Shutting down diversity, equity, and inclusion programs

Trump also targeted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts within government and military circles. He argued these programs were pointless and biased, even though plenty say they're essential in promoting fairness at work.

Accordingly, he stated that DEI programs weakened merit and unity in federal and military settings. Critics, on their side, caution that scrapping these programs could lead us towards a society more divided and less inclusive.

Bringing back limits on transgender military service

Another big move reinstated a ban stopping transgender people from joining up with military ranks. This was first seen during Trump‘s earlier time in office but was lifted by President Biden in 2021. It hasn't been without pushback, as many see it as discriminatory and harmful.

The ban suggests transgender folks are unsuitable due both medically and morally, a position many human rights groups and military pros harshly condemn.

Limiting gender-affirming care access

Alarm bells rang loud with an executive order that limited access minors have on gender-affirming health services. It banned things like hormone treatments and puberty blockers, which can be critical in helping transgender youth deal with gender dysphoria.

Doctors and mental health experts caution that these limits could lead trans youth toward more depression and suicidal thoughts. Studies highlight how vital access needs safeguarding since it directly impacts health and happiness.

Questioning LGBTQ+-inclusive education

The Trump team also went after school policies by pushing orders questioning LGBTQ+-inclusive education. It calls out discussions on transgender topics as "indoctrination" and pushes reviewing or stripping them from teaching materials.

Teachers and advocates counter that inclusive lessons root understanding and acceptance among students deep, and efforts shunning such learning could pump up bullying against LGBTQ+ young ones.

The ripples from these orders spread wide, reaching beyond just LGBTQ+ individuals' rights and welfare — they set a worrying standard looking ahead. Staying aware and involved remains critical, pushing back and rallying around rights we can all stand with.

If these policies affect you, remember support exists. In America, there's help through National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Those in Britain can turn towards Samaritans at 116 123.
