Rutger published: An Evening with LGBTQ+ Heroes at Capital Pride

The Capital Pride Alliance, renowned for orchestrating the vibrant array of LGBTQ Pride events in Washington, D.C., is extending a heartfelt invitation to members of the community to partake in a remarkable gathering. On the evening of January 7, both live and virtual audiences will have the opportunity to engage in an “Evening With LGBTQ+ Heroes.” This special occasion will celebrate individuals who have been honored with the annual Heroes Award, acknowledging their profound contributions to the community.

This unique event is a collaborative effort between the Capital Pride Alliance and Team Rayceen Productions, a distinguished local organization known for crafting impactful LGBTQ events. Additionally, it is endorsed by the 50th anniversary subcommittee of World Pride 2025, a momentous global event slated to take place in D.C.

Celebrating 50 Years of Pride

“The Capital Pride Alliance is thrilled to commemorate 50 years of Pride in our nation’s capital,” the announcement proudly proclaims. “As part of these festivities, we are eager to shine a light on some of the community organizers who have been recognized by our organization.” The evening promises to be a monthly virtual live series featuring these exceptional heroes, who will share their personal journeys, histories, and insights on what Pride represents in today’s world.

Event Details and Access

The event is scheduled to commence at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, at the prestigious Human Rights Campaign headquarters, located at 1640 Rhode Island Ave., N.W. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be accessible online through the dedicated link: capitalpride.org/evening-heroes. This digital platform ensures that everyone, regardless of location, can participate in this inspiring celebration.

Meet the Heroes

The evening’s lineup of speakers features some of the most influential figures within the LGBTQ community. Among them is Bishop Allyson Abrams, a revered Pastor/Bishop and Spiritual Leader of D.C.’s Empowerment Liberation Cathedral. Her spiritual guidance has been a beacon of hope and empowerment within the community.

Joining her is Ed Bailey, a notable nightclub and bar owner who operates two of D.C.’s most beloved establishments, Number Nine and Trade. His contributions to the social fabric of the city are invaluable, providing safe and welcoming spaces for the community to gather and celebrate.

Also speaking is Ben DeGuzman, currently serving as the director of the D.C. Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs. His work ensures that the voices and needs of Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQ individuals are represented and advocated for at the city level.

Advocates and Pioneers

Kenya Hutton, the president and CEO of the D.C. Center for Black Equity, will share his insights as well. His leadership in organizing D.C.’s annual Black Pride celebration has been pivotal in amplifying the voices and experiences of Black LGBTQ individuals.

Rayceen Pendarvis, a charismatic event host, interviewer, speaker, and staunch LGBTQ community advocate, will also grace the stage. Known for hosting events by Team Rayceen Productions, Rayceen’s dynamic presence and commitment to advocacy continue to inspire many.

Lastly, Bobbi Elaine Strang, a veteran local transgender activist, will share her stories. Through her leadership roles in various local groups such as the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance and the D.C. Anti-Violence Coalition, she has tirelessly championed for the rights and safety of transgender individuals and the broader LGBTQ community.

The event will be moderated by Benjamin Coy, who brings his expertise as Communications and Marketing Campaign Manager for the National LGBTQ Task Force and Action Fund. Known for moderating and co-hosting events with Team Rayceen Productions, his involvement ensures thoughtful and engaging discourse.

This gathering of heroes at the “Evening With LGBTQ+ Heroes” is more than just an event; it is a celebration of resilience, diversity, and unity. As the Capital Pride Alliance marks half a century of Pride, this event serves as a poignant reminder of the strides made and the work still needed to achieve true equality and acceptance. Join the community in honoring those who have paved the way and continue to inspire future generations.
