A transgender woman, an ardent fan of the New York Knicks basketball team, has reportedly been subject to invasive tracking via advanced facial recognition technology at Madison Square Garden (MSG) over a two-year span. This revelation surfaces amid allegations made in a lawsuit filed by a former security official who claims wrongful termination from the venue. According to the lawsuit, this woman has since been banned from the arena.
The lawsuit alleges that the woman, identified as Nina Richards (an alias used to protect her identity), became an undue focus of surveillance for Madison Square Garden’s security head, acting under directives for the arena's owner, James Dolan. Dolan, who leads the MSG company and owns multiple major venues including Radio City Music Hall and the Sphere, has been under scrutiny before for employing similar surveillance practices. Dolan also owns the New York Knicks and the New York Rangers hockey team.
Intrusive Surveillance Practices
The controversy regarding the alleged discriminatory surveillance practices comes in light of reports that, in 2024, Dolan’s facial recognition system at MSG was updated to include the images of approximately 1,500 attorneys engaged in ongoing litigation against his enterprises, effectively barring them from the premises.
Security operations chief John Eversole reportedly took notice of Richards in 2021, when events at the Garden resumed post-COVID-19 shutdowns. Described by a fellow security team member as “a very large transgender woman who was just a sports fan,” Eversole allegedly categorized Richards as a threat to the image of MSG and the professional sports teams associated with it. He ordered her inclusion in MSG’s facial recognition database and directed his team to conduct an open-source investigation into her activities, using security camera footage and additional intelligence.
These measures were purportedly justified by Eversole’s assertions that Richards' presence could be detrimental to the players and the venue’s reputation.
An Alleged Case of Profiling
The lawsuit, brought forward by former MSG security personnel Donnie Ingrasselino, contends that Richards was specifically targeted due to her gender identity. Many staff members compelled to partake in these surveillance efforts reportedly felt discomfort, viewing the actions as clear profiling.
“She posed no threat,” claimed another staff source. “She wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary for a fan; she was just enjoying the game.”
A documented internal report tracked Richards’ movements meticulously during a Knicks game, capturing her entry through the facial recognition-equipped gates, her interactions within the venue, and even her brief use of the women’s restroom. Her movements were monitored to such an extent that her relocation to upgraded seating near the celebrity-studded courtside was logged.
Richards had shared her excitement on social media about attending the game, posting photos with her companion in sparkling attire. The images, however, were reportedly added to her security file, further intensifying the concerns surrounding the surveillance practices.
The legal complaint asserts that Eversole fabricated a stalking accusation as a pretext to ban Richards from the premises altogether. Staff members interviewed anonymously for Wired have dismissed these accusations as unfounded.
Following the publicization of these allegations, Richards has retreated from her public social media profiles, maintaining her request for privacy and anonymity in the unfolding legal proceedings.
