Fans of the beloved Heartstopper series are on the edge of their seats as creator Alice Oseman provides an exciting year-end update on the eagerly anticipated film conclusion, Heartstopper Forever. The film, which promises to beautifully wrap up the cherished, queer romance of teens Charlie Spring (portrayed by Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (played by Kit Connor), is slated to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
Despite the anticipation and enthusiasm from fans, Oseman took to Instagram on December 21st to announce that the film is "still not quite finished." Addressing her audience, she expressed, "I know many of you are eager for updates, but we can't share anything from the film yet because it's still not quite finished… I've looked through all my photos, and there's so little I can share without spoiling anything!! I want you to have a spoiler-free experience."
While Oseman refrains from revealing any spoiler-heavy content, she did grace fans with two behind-the-scenes photos. One showcases Nick Nelson’s bedroom, while the other captures a moment with her and Heartstopper producer Patrick Walters.
In her update, Oseman reassured fans that significant progress has been made in the post-production phase, with picture editing nearly completed. The team has also begun working on animation, special effects, and music. "Then the film will be dubbed in many different languages, which takes a few months," she confirmed.
Oseman hinted at the promotional blitz fans can expect: "Then we get to the fun bit for you guys," she teased, referencing the marketing campaign that will precede the film's release. "I'm very nervous and scared about what you'll think of it… but that's probably normal! 2026 will be a big year for Heartstopper," she promised, thanking fans for their patience during what she described as a "quiet" period for the series.
The journey to Heartstopper Forever has been an emotional rollercoaster for fans. Following the release of the third season in October 2024, there was a period of uncertainty regarding the series' future, with fans anxiously awaiting news of its renewal. Relief came when Netflix announced in April that the story would conclude with a feature film, which wrapped filming in July of the same year. The streaming platform also confirmed the film's title, Heartstopper Forever, and its 2026 release date.
For those familiar with Oseman's graphic novels, the series has closely followed the plot of the previously released volumes. However, the film Heartstopper Forever will delve into uncharted territory as it is based on Volume Six of the novels, which has yet to be released. Fans are eagerly awaiting its publication on July 2nd in the UK and July 7th in America and Canada.
The film's storyline is expected to explore whether Nick and Charlie's relationship can endure the challenges of distance, as Nick prepares to leave for university while Charlie finds newfound independence at school. Over the summer, Locke and Connor were spotted filming scenes at Leeds train station, suggesting that Nick may be attending Leeds University and hinting at the couple's potential to maintain their relationship across distances.
The film's synopsis teases: "Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first loves really last forever?"
As fans eagerly await the next chapter of Nick and Charlie's story, they can revisit seasons one, two, and three of Heartstopper, which are currently available for streaming on Netflix. Join the conversation and share your thoughts in the comments, but remember to keep it respectful and inclusive.
Stay tuned for more updates on Heartstopper Forever and the continuous journey of love, growth, and friendship.
