Rutger published: Alexander Skarsgård Discusses Authentic Representation in BDSM Film 'Pillion'

The upcoming movie, *Pillion*, featuring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling, has been stirring up quite a bit more than a casual buzz. It's making waves with its fresh take on BDSM relationships. Both actors are really pushing past those old clichés that usually come with dom/sub dynamics.

At this year's BFI London Film Festival, where it premiered, audiences got a sneak peek. Skarsgård and Melling chatted about their dedication on staying true and real in this film. Skarsgård definitely made an impression with his daring sleeveless shirt and leather pants, while Melling, whom most remember as Dudley from *Harry Potter*, was all about how excited he was with this new story direction.

Diving deep with complex characters

In *Pillion*, Melling's character, Colin, lives a pretty ordinary life as a traffic warden and barbershop quartet member, still at home with his folks. That all changes when he meets Ray, a mysterious biker played by Skarsgård, on Christmas Eve. This encounter shoves Colin right out his comfort zone and introduces him a whole new universe.

Coln finds himself in a dom/sub relationship with Ray, which becomes a path self-discovery. The steamy scenes they share are more than just that. They cleverly highlight a lack in emotional connection, painting a picture on various layers in their relationship. It's telling when Ray consciously chooses not kiss Colin, hinting at unique rules and themes in dom/sub dynamics.

Challenging old stereotypes

The movie not only features Colin and Ray but also a range characters, like Jake Shears portraying a sub bottom boy, each with their emotional and physical intricacies. Skarsgård has been vocal about showing these relationships as they are, in all their honesty, as a means on breaking down stereotypes.

"After that big group scene, you'll see some couples, even within their dom/sub roles, can still be tender and loving. Kissing and cuddling aren't outta bounds," Skarsgård noted. "We aimed showing these relationships authentically, steering clear on stereotypes. Sex can be awkward, funny, and yes, even messy—not always sleek and polished."

He emphasized that while Colin and Ray's relationship might miss some elements, it doesn't mean same all couples. "We wanted show that each couple's different. They're not carbon copies," Skarsgård explained.

Providing a fresh cinematic journey

Melling hopes *Pillion* will encourage audiences delve deeper in dom/sub culture. "This story rarely gets screen time," he pointed out. "It's a starting point viewers could begin understanding a subculture they might not know. That's its true worth."

Taking part in these bold scenes was new territory Melling, but he found it surprisingly comfortable. "Friends were shocked by its boldness when I discussed it," he admitted. "The sex scenes didn't cut story—they made it fuller, adding layers characters' bonds."

Directed by Harry Lighton in this debut, *Pillion* had Robbie Taylor Hunt on board as intimacy coordinator, ensuring scenes remained genuine and true.

Melling wrapped it up with, "From an acting viewpoint, these scenes were nailed perfectly. They didn't slow story; they pushed it. It was a joy take part in them."

*Pillion* makes its UK cinema debut on November 28th. This film promises a deep dive exploration in relationships and self-exploration in LGBTQ+ themes. We'd love know your thoughts, so feel free join discussion comments below—let's keep it kind and thoughtful!
