Alex Scott, a talented diver from Georgia, embarked on an extraordinary journey through the NCAA, facing personal challenges and ultimately finding love and belonging at Georgia Tech.
Scott's collegiate diving career began at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where he competed at the Division I level. Despite his impressive achievements, including qualifying for Nationals in 2023 and earning multiple podiums in the Horizon League Championships, Scott struggled with a sense of isolation.
"The team environment at IUPUI wasn't what I needed," Scott reflects. "I faced mental health issues and felt very alone, unable to connect with my teammates." Although he had come out as gay in high school, his orientation wasn't the issue; he simply couldn't find his place within the team culture.
During his sophomore year, Scott's life took a positive turn when he met Brian Zapp, a fellow gay athlete, through Tinder. Zapp, who played baseball for the University of Miami (Ohio), quickly became a significant part of Scott's life. "Meeting someone who understood the rigorous schedule of an athlete was invaluable," Scott shares. "We connected, and our relationship provided a much-needed escape from the difficulties at IUPUI."
With Zapp's encouragement and the support of his friends, Scott decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal, seeking a new environment where he could thrive both personally and athletically.
Scott's transfer to Georgia Tech proved to be a pivotal decision. "From the moment I spoke with the coaches and teammates, I felt at home," he recalls. The welcoming atmosphere of the swim and dive team helped Scott build connections that eluded him at his previous school.
Being closer to his family was another significant factor in Scott's decision to move. "My family has always been my rock," he says. "Their support during my coming out and throughout my journey has been unwavering." Back in Georgia, Scott cherishes every moment with his family, never taking their presence for granted.
Despite the distance, Scott and Zapp have maintained a strong relationship, visiting each other whenever possible. "The distance hasn't weakened our bond," Scott states. "We make it work, and every moment together is cherished."
Academically, Scott is on track to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, a program ranked among the best in the nation. His aspirations? Designing rides at Disneyland and Disney World, inspired by the legendary Imagineers before him.
"I have a passion for creativity, and I see endless possibilities for applying engineering in imaginative ways," Scott explains. As an openly gay man in a field traditionally lacking LGBTQ representation, Scott also aims to inspire others. "I want to show that gay individuals can excel in technical spaces and bring creativity to engineering."
Scott's journey underscores the importance of finding a supportive community, whether in sports or academics, and the power of love and acceptance in overcoming challenges. His story is a testament to resilience and the pursuit of one's dreams, no matter the obstacles.
