Six years ago, Alec Smith touched over 300,000 Instagram followers' hearts when he bravely came out as gay in an emotional video. This act resonated deeply, especially within his CrossFit community. His story, marked by his struggles with denial and fear on his path toward self-acceptance, has since inspired many facing similar battles.
Back in 2018, Alec was at his peak in CrossFit, competing at an elite tier in a sport that didn't have much representation from gay or bisexual men. However, health issues, including arthritis in his hip, forced him out. Despite stepping away from competition, his athletic spirit remained strong.
Through these challenges, Alec found happiness with Riley Hedstrom, a fellow fitness enthusiast. Engaged now, they have a wonderful connection, sharing dreams and lending unwavering support, strengthening each other's lives.
Rather than planning a big wedding, Alec and Riley have chosen a different path. "We began building our family last year," Alec shares. They've faced tough times with seven unsuccessful embryo transfers, which took a toll both financially and emotionally.
"We're still recovering and figuring out our path forward," Alec candidly admits. "Weddings can wait—building a family takes precedence. Maybe a celebration will follow someday." Their choice reflects a refreshingly honest take on life, placing personal milestones above traditional expectations. They're also embracing Riley's large, warm family from Minnesota, known especially during their festive Christmas Eve gatherings.
In a heartfelt episode on "Out Of Bounds," Alec opened up about his journey and how that coming out video changed things. "The community's support was incredible," he says. "Reading all those heartfelt messages brought me tears. Sure, there was some negativity, but it paled in comparison."
Sadly, he lost some friends from his competitive days who unfollowed after his announcement. But Alec's focus remains on those who stood by him, drawing strength from their support.
During that podcast, Alec fondly mentioned Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy's bold move at a Winter Olympics event, where he kissed his boyfriend on camera. "That was groundbreaking and so inspiring," Alec remarked. Kenworthy's courage underlines how public figures can uplift and empower those within LGBTQ+ communities.
Alec remains a vital voice in LGBTQ+ sports, championing authenticity and courage. Through podcasts like "Out Of Bounds," he shares reflections and sparks conversations about identity and acceptance, showing everyone how creating a life with love and purpose can redefine norms.
As Alec and Riley continue their journey, they hold onto hope and determination in building their family. Their love and dedication shine through, showing us that prioritizing personal values can lead us down paths that are both fulfilling and true.
Alec Smith's journey reminds us that life isn't a one-size-fits-all path. By honoring personal values over conventional timelines, we can carve out more meaningful, authentic lives.
