Albernas Champions Unity and Resilience in Florida Amid LGBTQ+ Challenges

Meet Fay Albernas, a vibrant Latina lesbian from Wilton Manors, Florida. Known for her energetic personality, Fay is often told she talks "really fast and loud." Her joyful spirit and lively discussions have led friends to exclaim, "Fay What?!", a phrase that now serves as a playful moniker.

In April, Fay, her wife, and stepdaughter joined fellow congregants from their nondenominational church, Unity on the Bay, to participate in the Miami Beach Pride Parade. As they marched, Fay proudly waved the Unity flag, symbolizing her spiritual home and her commitment to representing her community's faith and unity.

"Our community has faced a complicated relationship with religion," Fay explains, "Unity on the Bay strives to show LGBTQ+ individuals that there is a place for us and our faith. Miami Beach Pride isn’t just a celebration, it’s a family gathering."

For Fay, the parade was more than a festive occasion. Marching with her church felt exhilarating, as she felt embraced by the love and support from the onlookers. "The energy from the parade watchers was incredible," she recalls. "There was so much love."

Living in Florida, Fay acknowledges, presents its own set of challenges for the LGBTQ+ community. "It isn’t an easy state for us," she notes, citing the importance of visibility and resilience. "After recent political events, it’s crucial that we remain visible and assert the message that we are here to stay."

Fay's rallying cry for unity emerges at a time when the LGBTQ+ community faces numerous threats. She highlights the dangers facing queer youth and the increased suicide risks stemming from a lack of support. "Our children’s lives are at risk when they aren't seen or supported during pivotal moments," she stresses.

Women’s rights are also under threat, according to Fay. "The challenges women face are shocking," she says. "I worry that a time may come when my autonomy is compromised." She further emphasizes the importance of federal funding for HIV/AIDS research and prevention, crucial resources that many in the community rely on for survival.

Of particular concern to Fay are the issues facing the transgender community. "Our trans siblings are the most threatened," she expresses with urgency. "From those serving in the military to individuals whose identities are not honored, the injustices are heartbreaking. We must protect our trans family."

When it comes to expressing her personality through fashion, Fay is enthusiastic. "Isn't my outfit fabulous? A talented gay friend helped me with it," she beams. With the Miami Beach Pride taking place on an exceptionally hot day, Fay needed something that was both comfortable and reflective of her vibrant identity. "Dale Stine, my stylist and photographer, nailed it with this look," she says, pointing to her stylish tutu. "I can't imagine my life without my wonderful gay friends!"

Fay underscores the importance of solidarity between lesbians and gay men. "I hope every lesbian has a gay friend," she states. "During the AIDS crisis, it was often lesbians who cared for gay men in their hardest moments. We need to rekindle that spirit of unity."

The spirit of Pride continues to inspire people across the nation. With stories like Fay’s, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of standing together against adversity. As we prepare for Pride Month 2025, let us celebrate the diversity within our community and strive towards a future of acceptance and solidarity.
