Alan Cumming is known for his diverse talents, from acting and producing to presenting and owning a queer bar. However, his role as the artistic director of Scotland's Pitlochry Festival Theatre may be his most personal endeavor yet. Born just 15 miles from Pitlochry, Cumming is set on putting the town on the map with "Out in the Hills," a vibrant new festival dedicated to celebrating LGBTQ+ arts and voices. This exciting event is scheduled to take place from January 16 to January 18, 2026, promising to illuminate the start of the year with a variety of performances, exhibitions, and discussions.
Cumming, together with curator Lewis Hetherington, has curated a diverse program in which he is also participating. The festival will feature film screenings, theatre performances, photography exhibitions, and intriguing conversations. Among the highlights, Cumming will lead the cast in a new adaptation of Noël Coward's "Me and the Girls," adapted by Neil Bartleet. The festival also includes "In Conversation" events with notable figures such as Zander Murray and Graham Norton, a reading by Ian McKellen, stand-up comedy, a queer ceilidh, DJ sets, and workshops exploring LGBTQ+ history and creativity.
"It’s fantastic to see indigenous Scottish people who are queer, trans, and non-binary also being represented," Cumming remarked, emphasizing his commitment to uplifting local Scottish talent alongside international stars.
