Aimee Lou Wood, renowned for her role in "The White Lotus," recently opened up about an opportunity she had to decline due to a scheduling conflict. Wood, who has captured audiences’ hearts with her performances, was slated to appear as a guest judge on the beloved show, "RuPaul’s Drag Race UK." Unfortunately for her and her fans, a conflict with another significant project led her to turn down this unique chance.
The chance to judge on "Drag Race UK" was a dream come true for Wood, who is a self-proclaimed fan of the show. However, during the time when she was approached, she was also entering into rehearsals for the critically acclaimed musical "Cabaret." The musical, which has won numerous Tony Awards, required Wood to dedicate her full attention, leaving no room in her schedule for the filming of "Drag Race UK."
Wood took on the iconic role of Sally Bowles in the West End production of "Cabaret," a role she embodied from February to May 2023. Her commitment to the musical was unwavering, and as a result, she was unable to participate in the filming of "Drag Race UK," much to the disappointment of her fans who love her presence in campy and vibrant television settings.
In a conversation with a well-known LGBTQ+ publication, Wood shared her aspirations candidly. "Oh my God. Can I tell you something? So there’s only a few things in my life that I wanted to do," she confessed. Her list included starring in "White Lotus," being a guest judge on "Drag Race," and performing in "Cabaret." With "Cabaret" and "The White Lotus" under her belt, she expressed a strong desire to revisit the opportunity to appear on "Drag Race."
"I got Cabaret… I got offered to do UK Drag Race and I missed it because I was rehearsing for Cabaret, so I need to get my opportunity again. I have to get it again," Wood stated passionately. Although she did not disclose which season she was supposed to judge, it was likely during "Drag Race UK"'s fifth season, or possibly "RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World" season two.
Wood’s affection for "Drag Race" is no secret. Previously, she mentioned in an interview that being a guest judge on the show was one of her greatest career goals. "I’m an Aquarius," she said, "I don’t set goals in my life. I just go with it. But the only two things I’ve ever said I wanted were to be a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and play Sally Bowles in Cabaret."
Having now added "The White Lotus" to her list of achievements, she has successfully achieved two of her three most significant career ambitions. Currently, Wood is starring as the charismatic Chelsea in the third season of "The White Lotus," adding another layer to her diverse career.
Her role in "The White Lotus" has been met with enthusiasm, making her one of the standout characters of the season. With her popularity and career on the rise, many fans and industry insiders believe that the time is ripe for her to make her guest judge debut on "Drag Race." There’s a mounting call for RuPaul and fellow judges to extend the invitation once again, hoping to see Wood bring her unique flair and love for drag culture to the judging panel.
"The White Lotus" is currently airing, captivating audiences on HBO in the United States and on Sky Atlantic and the streaming service NOW in the UK. Fans of Wood eagerly await her next move, whether it be on the stage, screen, or perhaps finally in the judge’s chair on "Drag Race."
