The head honcho at Australian rules football has thrown his support behind rapper Snoop Dogg as he gears up as this year's grand final headliner. Recently, Snoop found himself in hot water after voicing some discomfort about a queer character in Disney's 2022 film "Lightyear," sparking quite a stir.
Despite all that, Andrew Dillon, chief executive officer at Australian Football League (AFL), stands by his decision, saying he's confident Snoop Dogg will put on an incredible show during this year-end event.
“I can't wait,” Dillon said on Monday, September 1st. “When that last Saturday in September rolls around, we'll see two top teams battling it out. The grand final entertainment will just make it all even better.” Dillon seems sure that this year will be something special and believes Snoop Dogg will deliver a performance people won't forget.
Dillon also stressed how important it was not just looking at Snoop Dogg's past but who he has become. He admitted, “Sure, we don't necessarily endorse every single lyric ever penned by artists who perform on our stage, but it matters what they're bringing now.”
Dillon's comments came after Snoop Dogg's appearance on "It's Giving" podcast that very same day. He shared an anecdote about watching a "Toy Story" spin-off with his grandson, who had some questions about a same-sex kiss scene. "Papa Snoop, how can she have a baby with a woman? She's a woman," his grandson asked.
Snoop confessed he was taken aback by it all. "Aw s**t, I didn't sign up fo this s**t, I came here just thinking it was a damn movie. Now I'm stuck with explaining things I wasn't readyfor," he said, clearly caught off guard and uncomfortable.
He went on about feeling overwhelmed by such scenes, wondering how often he'd have unexpected talks about LGBTQ+ themes in kids' movies. His big worry? How these themes fit in children's films.
As debates rage on, Dillon's backing highlights AFL's tightrope act between entertainment and keeping everyone in mind. His words reflect AFL's push toward inclusivity while tackling entertainment's complicated choices.
This all occurred just as Adelaide's Izak Rankine faced heat and a reduced suspension over a homophobic slur during a game, adding more fuel around LGBTQ+ issues in sports.
With only so much time before AFL's grand final kicks off, excitement builds not just over which teams will duke it out, but also what's expected from Snoop Dogg's performance. It's poised as a showstopper, while conversations around representation and inclusivity show no signs yetof dialing down.
