Rutger published: Adams Morgan Queer Bar Faces Vandalism and Stands Strong

Just this past Thursday, Adams Morgan's beloved LGBTQ+ haven, Sinners and Saints, suffered a heartbreaking act. As Washington D.C.'s only QTBIPOC (queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and people or color) bar, it became a target, with both a break-in and hateful graffiti marring a place meant purely as a joy-filled community hub.

An unexpected act

In a deeply moving post on social media, Sinners and Saints laid bare what happened. Their iron gate and glass door were smashed, with shards littering their floors. To make things worse, someone had scribbled a slur — "FAGGOT" — in black ink on a wall, twisting a knife in an already painful episode. To have this happen during DC Black Pride and on WorldPride 2025's cusp added further insult.

Yet, even amid heartbreak, their spirit didn't waver. "We are heartbroken, but we are not broken," their message declared, doubling down on their mission. They stressed that their venue exists as a shield and celebration space specifically aimed at queer and trans BIPOC folks, and this attack has only strengthened their resolve.

Coming together in defiance

What followed was a rallying cry — an invitation towards unity. "To those who tried harming us: hate only sharpens our defiance. To our community: we see you, love you, and we'll keep fighting." That message was clear: Sinners and Saints embodies resistance. They're determined, they'll rebuild, they'll STAY OPEN. Their doors and hearts remain wide open as a sanctuary. "Stand with us. Share this. Show up. We keep us safe," their post urged.

Co-owner Fazeel Ashraf mirrored this sentiment, sharing his mix-up sorrow and steely resolve. "It hurt deeply, but we won't be silenced. In today's political climate, QTBIPOC spaces are essential," he stressed, expressing interest in a phone interview with a partner, underlining how critical these spaces are as safe havens.

Community steps up

The LGBTQ+ community's reaction was immediate and moving, flooding social platforms with support. "Let us help!" supporter Nik Battaglia chimed in. "I'm a handy queer with handy friends — ready with tools, paint, and willing hands." These shows highlight a community poised and determined not just in words, but in action.

Even familiar faces added their voices. Laganja Estranja, famous from "RuPaul's Drag Race," commented, "What a response! I believe in you. Sending love and strength," underscoring how strong and interconnected this community remains even when faced with threats.

Though authorities haven't responded yet — just crickets from Metropolitan Police Department — this doesn't dial down community resilience. Their mission, rooted in inclusivity and safety, beams brightly. Follow updates from Sinners and Saints on their Instagram, or offer your time and support in whatever ways possible.

A symbol and shield

While deeply painful, this attack has sparked a defiant unity — a statement that no amount or kind or hate will shutter love or acceptance. Sinners and Saints stands firm, a symbol and sentinel refusing retreat against adversity.

Such incidents remind us still: LGBTQ+ spaces face complex challenges, but their spirits won't be dimmed. With doors and arms wide open, Sinners and Saints welcomes all seeking a place and people that are refuge and resistance.

As rebuilding begins, let this call be loud and clear: "Stand with us. Share this. Show up. We keep us safe." Together, this community isn't just rebuilding walls but reaffirming what really binds: love, acceptance, and unapologetic resilience.
