Rutger published: Acclaimed Trans Youth TV Series Returns for Free UK Viewing

The much-loved TV series "First Day" makes a comeback in UK on Friday, July 4, with a free release on YouTube. Five years since its debut, this move by its creators aims at tackling ongoing discrimination against transgender individuals, especially young ones, head-on.

Embracing identity and overcoming challenges

"First Day" first hit screens in 2020 on ABC, Hulu, and CBBC, telling Hannah Bradford's story. She's a twelve-year-old transgender girl stepping bravely and honestly through her first year at middle school. The series captures her journey as she embraces her true self amidst both typical adolescent challenges and those unique hurdles faced by transgender youth.

Praise has poured in from all quarters, lauding its authentic storytelling. It's snagged several prestigious awards, from an International Children's Emmy Award and a Rose d'Or, right through a GLAAD Media Award. But despite its success, UK viewers haven't had a chance since its original run on CBBC. By releasing it on YouTube, it's a step toward bridging this representation and support void in UK media.

Building understanding through stories

Julie Kalceff, who writes and directs "First Day," knows how media representation can powerfully affirm transgender youths' identities, especially with their rights feeling threatened. "We wanted a true-to-life portrayal," says Kalceff, "one that tells a universal tale about hope, friendship, and overcoming adversity."

She hopes "First Day" becomes a source that resonates deeply with transgender kids, echoing their challenges and triumphs. The series also aims at growing empathy and understanding in cisgender audiences, breaking down myths and building bridges.

Tackling today's pressing issues

This free re-release directly responds in part due heightened institutional discrimination faced by transgender individuals in UK. Studies highlight a significant toll on mental health in transgender youth, further burdened by restrictive policies, like puberty blockers bans. Young transgender people often feel despair and anxiety amid these restrictions.

Kalceff and her team are unwavering in their mission with "First Day" - it stands as a voice against harmful narratives and a beacon supporting these young lives.

Fighting false perceptions

Kirsty Stark, producer, stresses representation's vital role in erasing misinformation about transgender lives. "There's so much misunderstanding about being transgender," Stark mentions, pointing at how myths thrive through lack access storytelling that rings true.

By opening up "First Day" widely, creators are intent on confronting these misleading tales with genuine depictions. It's beyond just pure entertainment; it becomes an educational tool promoting empathy and broadened understanding.

With "First Day" set on YouTube, viewers aren't just invited watch, they're encouraged join conversation, sharing insights and fostering an enlightening discourse surrounding transgender youth experiences.
