Rutger published: A Year of Policies Affecting LGBTQ+ Rights

By NICO DiALESSANDRO

One year ago, on January 20, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the president of the United States for the second time. Over the course of the year, his administration has enacted a series of policies that have significantly impacted the LGBTQ+ community. This article provides an overview of the major changes and actions taken by the administration that have affected LGBTQ+ rights.

Defining Sex and Gender

On his first day back in office, Trump announced a new policy defining gender strictly as male or female, based on biological sex. This executive order revoked federal recognition of transgender identities, affecting documentation and access to facilities matching one's gender identity. The move was a rollback of previous policies that had embraced gender diversity and inclusion.

Dismantling Diversity Initiatives

Trump also signed an order to dismantle Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion mandates across federal agencies. This reversed initiatives aimed at combating systemic barriers related to race, gender identity, and sexual orientation, among other factors. The administration's stance was framed as a return to "common sense" and "merit-based" policies.

Health Care and Funding Cuts

Significant cuts to LGBTQ+ health care funding were enacted, including the cancellation of grants focused on HIV testing, AIDS research, and other health issues disproportionately affecting the LGBTQ+ community. This has led to a substantial decrease in support for essential health services, creating uncertainty and fear among affected individuals.

Additionally, the administration banned federal funding for gender-affirming care for minors, directing health departments to restrict insurance coverage for such treatments. This policy has had a chilling effect on the availability of necessary medical care for transgender youth.

Changes to Immigration Policies

The administration's immigration policies have also adversely affected LGBTQ+ individuals. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services revised policies to recognize only two biological sexes, excluding nonbinary and transgender identities from immigration documentation.

Moreover, reports emerged of subpoenas for private medical records of LGBTQ+ minors, raising concerns about privacy violations and government overreach. Legal experts have criticized these actions as attempts to intimidate and marginalize vulnerable communities.

Impact on Civil Rights

Throughout the year, numerous civil rights and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have expressed concern over the administration's actions. The removal of LGBTQ-specific resources from federal websites, changes to military service policies, and cuts to suicide prevention hotlines have sparked widespread protest and outrage.

Internationally, the U.S. withdrew from the United Nations LGBTI Core Group, signaling a retreat from advocacy for global LGBTQ+ rights. The administration's domestic and international policies reflect a broader trend toward the erasure and marginalization of LGBTQ+ identities.

Looking Forward

As the year unfolds, the LGBTQ+ community and its allies continue to advocate for the protection and restoration of rights that have been challenged. Many fear that these policies represent a profound step backward in the fight for equality and inclusivity.

In response to these challenges, grassroots and national organizations are mobilizing to support affected individuals and push for policy changes. The resilience of the LGBTQ+ community remains strong, as activists work tirelessly to ensure that progress is not lost and that the voices of marginalized communities are heard and respected.

As the administration continues to implement its agenda, it remains crucial to stay informed about the issues impacting LGBTQ+ rights. Advocacy, education, and solidarity are essential tools in the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.
