Rutger published: A Wave of Inclusivity: How Gay Surf Week is Redefining Surf Culture

Finding identity and waves in Sri Lanka

"Is that your girlfriend?" That's how my first surf lesson in Sri Lanka kicked off. My instructor was trying a bit too hard at small talk, pointing at a friend who was effortlessly riding her longboard. In a place where being open about who I am could stir trouble, I wasn't keen on diving deep. My focus was supposed be on mastering surfing, yet his curiosity about my life was distracting. As I dodged his questions, a perfect wave slipped right past me, unnoticed. It made me wonder: how can you truly thrive if you can't be yourself?

Surfing often comes with baggage—a lingering heteronormativity and a macho vibe that sometimes overshadows its roots in connection and community. Plenty still cater primarily toward "bro" culture or wellness retreats that prioritize social media aesthetics over genuine experiences. But change, albeit slow, seems underway. More women and LGBTQ+ surfers are fearlessly claiming their space, even though they remain underrepresented.

The birth and essence behind Gay Surf Week

After years hopping around and catching waves, I kicked off Gay Surf Week, creating a haven where queer spirits could dive headfirst (or feet first) in surfing's thrilling embrace. Riding a wave—that uplifting glide and sheer movability—mirrors our community's relentless pursuit: finding peace in often unwelcoming places.

But Gay Surf Week isn't just about turning out a whole new crew; it's about carving out a space where everyone can breathe deeply, give something new a shot, and revel in joy, not just survival. It celebrates and elevates queer identities. For its vibrant welcome and breathtaking scenery, Costa Rica was a no-brainer. It's also pioneering, being Central America‘s first country with same-sex marriage.

The variety at those early gatherings was astonishing. We had trans surfers, 60-somethings trying surfing, seasoned pros, newcomers still in self-discovery, and even those who'd never laid eyes on an ocean. The retreats' magic lies not only in oceanic rushes but in shared cheers, continued group chats, night-long dances, and a budding, supportive community.

Broadening horizons with Sapphic Surf Week

With success under our belt, we launched Sapphic Surf Week, a celebration primarily catering LBT+ individuals, spotlighting woman-loving-woman expressions. Hosted at Surf Syngergy in Costa Rica, this luxury wellness spot recently snagged Women's Health Magazine's "Best Retreat For Total Rejuvenation." It's a promise: top-tier experiences, rejuvenating yoga, sumptuous homespun meals, safe, welcoming vibes.

Setting Gay and Sapphic Surf Weeks apart from typical retreats, they mix top-notch surf coaching with nostalgia-inducing camp kinship. Participants delve deep with breathwork sessions, ice baths, movie nights, and pool parties. We tackle life's hurdles together, nestled over coconuts and sunsets. These all-inclusive retreats snag your back from airport pickups, sunscreen, so you simply relish Costa Rica's tropical allure and steady waves.

A haven celebrating queer identity

For me, these retreats offer that joyous, nurturing atmosphere I craved when I first emerged. It's more than a holiday; it stands as a bold declaration celebrating queer identities, nestled in paradise.

Looking forward, we've got two retreats slated in 2025: Sapphic Surf Week from August 23-30 and Gay Surf Week from October 25-November 1. As a nod and thanks, we're offering 25% off Sapphic Surf Week, $300 off Gay Surf Week. Have questions? Reach out directly!
