Rutger published: A Trans Athlete's Journey: Playing Through the Noise

Over the past week, I found myself on an unexpected detour to Las Vegas, attending the Creating Change Conference. It was a much-needed opportunity to reflect on the recent hostile actions against transgender individuals by the newly established government. As I watched the inaugural address, filled with cynicism and disdain toward many groups, including transgender people like myself, I couldn't help but feel a mix of fear and anger.

The one constant that helps me navigate these turbulent emotions is the solace I find in sports. For two hours, three times a week, I immerse myself in the game, focusing on drills, learning new plays, and strategizing with my team. This has been my refuge from the overwhelming dread and anxiety that often accompany the current political climate.

I play football for the Connecticut Ambush, a second-year club competing in the Women’s Football Alliance’s third division. When I’m not on the field or writing about sports, I work as an operator for Trans Lifeline, providing support to those in distress. The present moment is undeniably challenging, but my involvement in sports and community support has been a lifeline.

I am grateful for my team owner, Colleen Vacirca, who reached out with words of support when I expressed my fears on social media. The camaraderie I share with my teammates, both on and off the field, is invaluable. Sports have been my sanctuary and a form of self-care ever since my late father introduced me to the game.

These connections are crucial for someone like me, a transgender American in 2025, regardless of whether they participate in sports. I worry for my friends who are parents, dealing with the harassment their transgender children face at school. I fear for my friends in the military, uncertain of their future because the nation they serve seems ready to dismiss them.

The aggressive rhetoric against transgender individuals has been exacerbated by recent political maneuvers, including attempts to ban transgender athletes. The hostility is palpable, both online and in real-life interactions. I have encountered comments that are not only violent but also deeply disturbing, reflecting a societal undercurrent of hatred.

Transgender athletes like Sadie Schreiner, a standout sprinter at the Rochester Institute of Technology, continue to face backlash simply for excelling in their sports. Despite the negativity, Schreiner remains focused and determined, serving as an inspiration for many, including myself. Her resilience is a testament to the spirit of transgender athletes everywhere.

The Creating Change Conference, despite the challenges faced by the community, provided a sense of unity and strength. It was a gathering of allies and advocates, all committed to promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion. A particularly memorable moment for me was the encouragement I received from fellow advocate Chris Mosier during a panel discussion. His words reminded me of the importance of raising my voice and sharing our stories.

I am determined to continue playing sports and advocating for my community. I refuse to be silenced by those who claim to "protect women's sports" while simultaneously undermining the achievements of transgender and cisgender women alike. The truth is, I have been welcomed and supported by every team I have played for, across different sports and states.

The reality of having one's identity politicized is both frustrating and frightening, but I remain committed to fighting for my community off the field and giving my best for my team on the field. This is what being a transgender American means to me in 2025. I will stand strong, play hard, and continue to be a voice for change.
