Rutger published: A Touching Tradition: Play Catch With a Dad Brings Joy at Pride

Back in 2019, John Piermatteo, a compassionate dad and ally, decided he wanted a meaningful gesture that showed his support. So, he came up with "Play Catch With a Dad," a simple yet deeply impactful tradition. His aim? To offer love and acceptance, especially reaching out those in LGBTQ+ communities who might feel a little left out by their own families.

As a straight guy, Piermatteo explains, "I was thinking about those who might be on their own, and that's really how Play Catch With a Dad started." The idea was straightforward—create a space where people could connect with a father figure through a game as timeless as catch.

The birth a heartfelt tradition

It all started at York Unity Fest in Pennsylvania. Armed with a homemade sign and a football, Piermatteo set up shop. "I painted a simple sign and propped it against a tree," he recalls. He wasn't sure what would happen, but it turns out people were more than ready.

He paints a vivid picture: "People would glance at my sign, catch my eye a few times, then come over and say, 'Can I play catch with you?'" These moments often ended with emotional hugs and heartfelt words.

And it's been emotional. "Almost half who join us end up crying in our arms," Piermatteo shares. "Some see our sign and just break down."

Taking it across America

After a short break because, well, life happens, Play Catch With a Dad came back with even more enthusiasm. People—old friends and new faces—joined in, and soon it was making waves at Pride events all over.

By 2023, Piermatteo took this tradition coast-to-coast, from San Francisco Pride all through San Diego. Everywhere he went, people appreciated that simple yet profound connection.

In Phoenix, he teamed up with another dad, Jim Walter, and over two days, they played catch with over 300 people! "Having just two dads wasn't enough," he laughs. "Next time, we'll bring more dads—we learned that sharing this joy isn't tiring, it's energizing!"

Keeping love and connection alive

This tradition isn't slowing down. Piermatteo and his crew are set on visiting more places like Chicago Pride and even Baltimore Orioles' Pride Night. They can't wait and neither can we!

“We've got dads from all walks—straight dads, gay dads, dads with LGBTQ+ kids, you name it,” Piermatteo stresses. “But what binds us? It's our desire and commitment: making sure everyone feels seen and supported.”

Social media's full with love from those touched by this initiative. One message said, "That warm hug and a simple 'You're doing great, kiddo,' meant everything. Thanks so much."

Play Catch With a Dad isn't just about tossing a ball. It reminds us all how vital acceptance and understanding are. As it grows, so does its positive impact, creating a sense community and belonging in Pride fests across America and beyond.
