"I can't quite wrap my head around it—she's really here with us now," Kevin excitedly shares about his little daughter, who's just two and a half months old. He and his husband, Michael, are overjoyed as they dive headfirst on their parenting adventure.
For Kevin and Michael, becoming parents has been a long road that started after lockdown, taking them four years! They're currently waiting on parental orders, and Kevin describes their surrogacy experience as nothing short than remarkable. He says it introduced them both "to a whole new understanding and boundarylessness in love, sacrifice, determination, and strength."
Calling their surrogate a "warrior," Kevin says, "The fact she chose this path with us, especially after those earlier setbacks, it's just amazing." He reflects on how special their connection has become: "It's a relationship unlike any other. She's not a sister, aunt, or cousin, yet she's undeniably family. We make sure we stay in touch regularly."
In an effort reach out and support others considering surrogacy, Kevin has started a YouTube channel named KPB. “The journey has brought us joy and love, and we're incredibly thankful,” he says. “There aren't enough resources out there—you usually end up either joining memberships or navigating through a maze just find what you need.”
Having been a couple now since two decades ago, they chose Surrogacy UK, a group that helps prospective parents and surrogates meet via social events. Kevin jokingly refers it, saying, “It's like Facebook but specifically tailored those involved surrogacy.”
He notes, “The surrogate holds all decision-making power. It's truly altruistic—they choose how they'd like help, and receive only expenses.”
Building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect usually takes about three months between surrogates and intended parents.
In UK, surrogates get reimbursed only reasonable expenses—things like medical fees, travel, post-birth retreats, gifts, and any lost earnings. This keeps altruism at heart, ensuring it's accessible willing participants looking help others start families.
Helen Prosser, one founders behind Brilliant Beginnings—the UK's first organization that offers a fully managed surrogacy pathway—explains that process generally spans two three years, with legalities themselves requiring six nine months post-baby's arrival.
Helen alongside Natalie Gamble, launched Brilliant Beginnings and NGA Law back 2017, inspired by organized US model, aiming ease those embarking surrogacy journey.
“There'll always challenges, but our goal making sure everyone approaches these from stable, positive place,” Prosser shares.
On longing children, she remarks, “It truly innate, and one life's greatest joys.”
However, UK currently struggles with "massive shortage" surrogates, highlighting critical need more women volunteer in helping foster families.
In 2023, Law Commission released report, *Building Families Through Surrogacy: A New Law*, suggesting pivotal changes simplify UK surrogacy laws, making entire process more accessible those dreaming parenthood.
Kevin and Michael's heartfelt journey beautifully demonstrates surrogacy's enduring power love and connection. Through trials triumphs alike, they offer hope guidance those considering similar paths.
