Rutger published: A Personal Journey Through Group Therapy at a Christian University

In his eye-opening new book, *Shame-Sex Attraction*, Lucas F.W. Wilson offers a heartfelt glimpse through personal stories from those who've endured conversion therapy. Brought out by Jessica Kingsley Publishers, this collection includes 17 essays, featuring Wilson's own experiences at Liberty University.

An eye-opening moment at Liberty University

As I was finishing up my meal, my curiosity kicked in, and I turned towards Thaddeus, a fellow student at Liberty University. “So, what do you think we can expect from our group?” I asked.

Thaddeus stretched back comfortably, a laid-back vibe in his posture. “I'm pretty curious myself,” he said casually, piquing my interest with his easygoing manner.

Liberty University, with its deeply rooted evangelical foundation, was where many like us ventured, hoping a Christian education might bridge our faith and personal identities. We aimed at merging our beliefs with who we truly were.

Finding common ground through shared journeys

It was through Steph, a mutual friend, that Thaddeus and I were introduced. Steph figured Thaddeus' experiences with same-sex attraction could offer me some clarity. I found solace in him, as his story mirrored my own struggles, both relatable and attractive, as we wrestled with our conflicting desires and upbringing.

It wasn't easy finding people on campus who truly got what we were going through. Whenever we did meet others, we had a discreet yet supportive circle, with Pastor Dane Emerick guiding students like us.

Seeking advice in confidence

After a tense confrontation with a dorm leader, I knew I had no choice but seek out Pastor Dane. Liberty's strict rules made it perilous expressing same-sex attraction, making privacy absolutely vital.

Meeting Thaddeus through Steph was a breath a fresh air, offering a sense a community. We eagerly awaited a group session led by Pastor Dane, who reassured us our journey towards 'sexual purity' was a worthy cause.

A group meeting: a night full with mixed feelings

That night, Thaddeus and I lingered in anticipation at cafeteria, part nervous, part eager. “I think I know who's going,” I guessed as we made our was towards Music Hall under night's shadow.

Inside, we recognized people—some we suspected shared our struggles, others were unexpected. Pastor Dane drove discussion as stories were shared, encouragement exchanged, all under faith's expectations.

Yet, even amid support, an internal conflict simmered. Teachings clashed with who I was, leaving me torn between comfort in familiar yet frustrated by a façade I couldn't sustain.

Building new friendships and discovering hope

During session, Mac, another student, caught my attention. Our eyes locked often; conversation came easy—such a rarity here.

As meeting wrapped up, I suggested Mac and a few others get together again. Those enthusiastic nods lifted my spirits.

Amid all these mixed emotions, a spark hope appeared. Meeting people like Thaddeus and Mac, who understood my truth, was invaluable. Maybe, just maybe, within Liberty's walls, room existed genuine connection, even if a complex path lay ahead.
