The LGBTQ Sports Hall of Fame made a triumphant return this year, hosted by the Sports Equality Foundation in Las Vegas at the Park MGM. This year's event marked a significant step forward in both profile and sponsorship, welcoming new supporters such as MGM, TNT, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The evening was filled with energy and camaraderie, drawing around 200 attendees, including advocates, athletes, coaches, and officials. These individuals, many of whom have been pivotal in advancing LGBTQ inclusion in sports, came together to celebrate and share stories. Newer voices in this movement, including contributors like the Fruit Hoops podcast, added fresh excitement to the gathering.
Honoring Achievements and Inspiring Future Generations
The event was a celebration of groundbreaking achievements and a beacon for future generations to continue breaking barriers. "This relaunch honors pioneering achievements and inspires future generations to thrive," said Robert Goman, the event chair.
I had the honor of introducing softball legend Kirk Walker, a veteran advocate for LGBTQ rights and one of the 12 inductees in this year's class. Walker's journey of openly embracing his identity and advancing inclusivity in sports has been an inspiration to many.
In addition to Walker, other notable inductees included former WNBA player Layshia Clarendon. Clarendon's acceptance speech resonated deeply, as they reflected on their journey of self-acceptance and fighting for personal and professional growth. "This is one of the biggest honors of my career," Clarendon stated, dedicating the award to their younger self who persevered through challenges.
A Celebration of Trailblazers in Sports
The night also paid tribute to esteemed figures such as Pat Griffin, Helen Carroll, and Sue Rankin, who have significantly influenced LGBTQ advocacy in sports. Griffin reminisced about shared moments with attendees, highlighting the long-standing relationships nurtured within the community. Carroll, a national champion coach and advocate, has been a cornerstone for inclusivity initiatives, while Rankin's enthusiastic advocacy echoes throughout academic and athletic circles.
Among the distinguished inductees were Schuyler Bailar, a trailblazing transgender athlete, Erik Braverman, a key figure in promoting LGBTQ inclusion within the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Sue Bird, a legendary WNBA champion known for her athletic excellence and advocacy.
Special Honors and Recognitions
Billy Bean, a former MLB player and advocate for inclusion, was posthumously awarded the inaugural Glenn Burke Award, recognizing his enduring impact on MLB's inclusivity efforts. Additionally, the WNBA received accolades as "Champions of Equality, Equity, and Social Change," acknowledging its four inductees and ongoing commitment to LGBTQ rights.
The LGBTQ Sports Hall of Fame, previously known as the Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame, welcomed its newest members, joining the ranks of outsports legends such as Jason Collins, David Kopay, and Billie Jean King. The induction ceremony underscored the importance of recognizing those who pave the way for equality in sports.

The Sports Equality Foundation's efforts to resurrect this tradition have been met with enthusiasm and gratitude.
