A New Chapter: LGBTQ+ Bookstore Blooms Again in Alexandria

Last fall, a remarkable change began in Old Town Alexandria. While the cobblestone streets and historic taverns remain iconic, a new cultural landmark has emerged, dedicated to sapphic love stories and diverse narratives. Friends to Lovers bookstore, located at 301 Cameron St., is the first of its kind in the DMV area, and it's already creating waves both locally and online with over 30,000 social media followers.

Owner and founder Jamie Fortin shared her journey with us, coinciding with National Book Lovers Day on August 9. She reflected on how a personal passion and a vision for inclusivity turned into a flourishing community hub. "If I wanted to open a business here," Fortin explained, "it had to be something I was truly passionate about and something unique." The idea for a romance bookstore struck her as perfect.

Despite skepticism from those who didn't see the value in such a space, Fortin pressed on. "We have countless sports bars, yet a space for women or queer people is suddenly 'too niche'?" she questioned. However, success soon changed perceptions.

Fortin found the ideal location on the second story of a building surrounded by other small businesses in Old Town. She ensured the bookstore's theme and atmosphere were welcoming and cohesive, focusing on romance novels that uplift marginalized communities. As a queer woman, Fortin is committed to creating spaces that celebrate women's and queer joy.

The bookstore opened in November 2024 after extensive planning and social media engagement. Tragically, three days after its grand opening, a fire caused significant damage. Fortin turned to social media for help, sharing the devastation through Instagram and TikTok. Her heartfelt posts reached "#BookTok" and garnered 300,000 views, raising $46,000 in a week.

"The support was overwhelming," Fortin said. "It was about the mission of creating a safe space for these communities." Encouraged by the nationwide support, she found a new location near King Street, a high-traffic area. Local businesses and artists rallied to help, with women-owned businesses providing furnishings and a local artist crafting a new sign.

Friends to Lovers reopened with vibrant pink walls, Pride flags, and art by women and LGBTQ artists. This August, they're hosting a weekend-long celebration for National Book Lovers Day and Romance Bookstore Weekend, aligned with Alexandria’s annual Sidewalk Sale.

"We have Jenna Voris coming in on the ninth," said Fortin. "It’s a full weekend celebration with authors, signings, and vendors selling unique items like ceramics." The bookstore's mission remains clear and empowered by the community's support.

Fortin acknowledges social media's role in connecting with their audience. "Through TikTok and Instagram, we’ve found our people. Visitors know what to expect and are eager to find diverse stories," she shared.

When discussing misconceptions about romance novels, Fortin emphasized the diversity available if one looks beyond the mainstream. "Even now, the default narrative is often 'straight and white'," she said. "But incredible stories from Desi women and others are out there. Queer readers can explore beyond their experiences."

A powerful moment for the bookstore came when a group of Midwestern kids visited. "They were amazed, saying, 'We’ve never seen a space like this!'" Fortin recounted. "Knowing there are places that welcome and understand them was transformative for those kids."

Fortin believes in the power of safe and supportive spaces. "Finding people who love and support you without judgment is powerful," she affirmed.

Friends to Lovers bookstore is more than just a shop; it's a testament to the resilience and strength of community. With each book sold and each story shared, it's rewriting narratives and paving the way for love and acceptance in Old Town Alexandria.
