Rutger published: A Mother's Plea for Understanding: My Trans Daughter's Journey

This letter responds directly and personally. It goes out as a heartfelt plea from a mother who's seen firsthand how critical it can be that stories like her daughter's reach those in power.

A personal letter with an urgent plea

Dear Leader,

As a parent, there are few things that can upend your entire existence like hearing words that threaten your child. Your recent comments have done just that; they've sent a chill down my spine. The fear I felt wasn't just momentarily unsettling; it's a deep, gnawing anxiety that clings on and won't let go. I find myself writing this letter with trembling hands, not as a political voice but as a mother whose story you need more than ever.

Navigating identity: our family's story

Back in 2006, I welcomed a child assigned male at birth. From just seven months old, my child's interests began challenging what society would expect. Whether it was at a toy store, where they were drawn towards toys typically meant 'for girls,' or at home, where blankets became dresses, it was clear that traditional gender norms didn't apply.

As my child learned more words, their identity became more apparent. At eighteen months, twirling with makeshift skirts became a joyous part, and by two and a half years, my child told me something unforgettable: "I'm a girl."

A moment etched in my memory: One Halloween, when my daughter was just three, she chose Snow White over anything else. For a child, Halloween's about freedom, but that year, it wasn't just a costume; it was an expression. I saw pure, unfiltered happiness as she 'floated,' not walked, down our street. That joy was a revelation.

The heartbreak and misunderstanding

Sadly, that magical night was shadowed by her father's words: "Next year, it'll be Batman or Superman, no more girl stuff." Those words created a rift that eventually split our family. It was agonizing watching a parent reject what seemed so clear and true about our daughter.

To be clear, Leader, my views might seem traditional—I recognize male and female genders. Yet, my daughter's life isn't about theories; it's an actual misalignment between her mind and body, a serious condition that can't be ignored.

The complex truth about gender identity

My daughter's experience diverges greatly from those transitioning later. For her, living as she truly was necessary, not a choice. Her identity wasn't influenced by external factors; it was intrinsic from day one.

Let's consider how all human fetuses start developmentally female, then differentiate. Why, then, do we balk at variations in gender identity? This isn't about imposing ideologies; it's about biology—a process capable affecting any part development can impact gender identity too.

When you defend a "biological truth" suggesting trans individuals impede women's spaces, know that my daughter has never posed a threat. Her existence and authenticity aren't rooted in agendas but in understanding who she has always been.

Seeing gender beyond societal norms

While gender roles might be social constructs, my daughter's story reaches beyond that—it's about brain chemistry and hormones. Reducing her life experience merely ideologies ignores substantial biological differences between social roles and intrinsic identity.

Undergoing fertility treatments before her birth revealed how simple medications could influence fetal development. If they're capable affecting biological sex, why declare gender identity rigidly binary?

Just as we accept physical variations, why resist understanding gender identity's complexities? Nature doesn't work within absolutes, nor should our understanding.

The need recognition and respect

With respect, who decides if my daughter exists? How do you ignore lifelong experiences, her understanding, simply because it challenges conventional beliefs?

Every announcement on this subject doesn't just come politically charged but chips away at my daughter's value and joy. Each headline makes me question her safety and future—how do I shield her from a society that denies her existence?

At eighteen, she's bright, talented, and testament achievable through love, support. My fear centers around future—a future clouded continuous questioning existence.

Often, understanding follows knowing someone transgender. I urge you, think how proclamations denying people like my daughter impact families who bear this reality.

In essence, we're all striving authenticity—our humanity gauged by treatment opposing experiences. Beyond policy, debates, remain people seeking respect, dignity, right existence.

With hope understanding,
Jessica
