Rutger published: A Heartfelt Farewell to The Vivienne: A Celebration of a Drag Icon's Life

The world of drag, along with fans and admirers around the globe, is in mourning after the recent passing of James Lee Williams, better known as The Vivienne. The much-loved drag performer, known for her charisma, uniqueness, and talent, passed away at the age of 32. Family, friends, and fans gathered in north Wales to honor her life and legacy.

The Vivienne, who was hailed as one of the most talented and versatile drag queens to grace the stage of RuPaul's Drag Race, left an indelible mark on the drag community and beyond. Her death, which occurred at her home in Cheshire on the 5th of January, has been confirmed by authorities as having "no suspicious circumstances."

A Life Celebrated

On the 27th of January, a heartfelt funeral service was held at St Margaret's Church in Bodelwyddan, a place close to The Vivienne's heart as it was where she spent her school years. The service was a poignant ceremony where countless friends and loved ones gathered to pay their respects.

The procession was led by a pair of majestic black horses adorned with jade-colored plumes, symbolizing the vibrancy and spirit with which The Vivienne lived her life. As a touching tribute, the iconic crown and sceptre awarded to winners of RuPaul's Drag Race were carried ahead of the coffin, serving as a reminder of her triumphs and contributions to the art of drag.

Remembered by Many

The funeral was attended by numerous celebrities and personalities from the world of entertainment, all of whom had been touched by The Vivienne's presence and talent. Among them was Jade Thirlwall, a former member of Little Mix, who has been a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and is set to headline a major queer pop festival later this year.

Ian Watkins, known as H from the popular band Steps, also attended to pay his respects. His friendship with The Vivienne highlights the wide-reaching influence and impact she had on the community.

Fellow drag queens Cheryl Hole and Baga Chipz, both of whom shared a close bond with The Vivienne, were present at the ceremony. Baga Chipz, in particular, had previously spoken about the deep friendship they shared, calling The Vivienne her "bestest friend." Their presence at the funeral underscored the profound loss felt by those who knew her well.

A Lasting Legacy

Actresses Claire Sweeney and Jennifer Ellison were also among the attendees, alongside television personality Kim Woodburn, who The Vivienne famously impersonated with humorous brilliance. Kerry Katona and other notable figures also came to show their love and support.

Former Drag Race alumni Veronica Green, who has recently been open about her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, and Tia Kofi, both attended, further demonstrating the solidarity and camaraderie within the drag community.

The Vivienne soared to fame in the UK drag scene after winning the title of "RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Ambassador" in 2015, and later became the first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. Her journey on the show was marked by her openness about her struggles with addiction, a testament to her courage and desire to inspire others facing similar challenges.

The legacy of The Vivienne will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of drag performers and fans, reminding us all of the power of authenticity and the strength found in community.

In these moments of remembrance, we invite you to share your thoughts and memories of The Vivienne below. Let us celebrate her life by continuing the conversation with kindness and respect.
