Rutger published: A Gay Veteran’s Heartwarming Journey of Love and Activism

The heartfelt tale about a gay Vietnam veteran and his beloved husband has struck a chord online, shining a light on LGBTQ+ veterans and moving countless people.

Audri Pettirosi, at just 21, felt compelled by her great uncle Marshall Belmaine's story. After meeting him last year, she was so touched by his path that she shared it on social media. Her viral TikTok video recounts Belmaine's devoted service during Vietnam, his courageous journey in accepting himself, and his enduring love with his husband, Albert Wakefield.

A life lived in service and secrecy

Marshall Belmaine's story unfolds during a turbulent era marked by profound societal shifts. He left high school after enduring harsh anti-gay bullying and joined up with Marine Corps in 1965. Throughout his time in uniform, he kept his true identity hidden, navigating a web spun with family and societal homophobia, particularly from his half-brother, who's also Audri's grandfather.

In Vietnam, Belmaine got injured in 1967 while bravely rescuing a fellow marine, earning himself a Purple Heart. His service led him through various locations, from Caribbean stints and Fort Meade, Maryland, before signing on with National Security Agency. By 1969, his military chapter closed with an honorable discharge.

Returning home in Massachusetts, Belmaine took on a slew roles—from janitor and factory worker, even tending laundromats—ushering in a period filled with introspection and personal growth.

Finding love and owning identity

Sometimes, destiny has a funny sense timing. In 1971, Belmaine met fellow Army vet Albert Wakefield at a bar. Their shared past and mutual struggles forged a connection that was unshakeable. Five years later, Belmaine made a brave step in coming out, setting their relationship on solid ground. Fast forward 1999, they headed south Florida, and by 2015, thanks Supreme Court's landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage across America, they finally tied knot.

This love story isn't just personal; it's a beacon resilience, showcasing love's incredible ability overcome hardships.
