Meet Jeff Rohrer: from NFL star linebacker with a courageous journey

To meet Jeff Rohrer, you'd never guess what surprises await. Standing tall at 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 235 pounds, this former Dallas Cowboys linebacker naturally commands attention. But it isn't just his physical stature; it was his incredible story about courage and love that truly captivates.

We met at a cozy spot in Beverly Hills, where Rohrer greeted us. Dressed casually in slightly too-big clothes and carrying a duffel bag, he seemed relaxed, yet there was something intriguing about him. The martini he balanced effortlessly in his hand hinted at layers beneath his calm exterior.

As we settled in, Jeff was open about setting a few ground rules, yet he was just as willing, if not eager, with his own questions. Though he appeared nervous, his hope was clear as he prepared himself—to share a personal journey that had been hidden away nearly his entire life.

Revelations and self-acceptance: Rohrer's path

In that dimly lit restaurant, you could almost feel Rohrer's anticipation. He was about ready, at long last, eager even, ready with a story that had been stifled too long. Our conversation flowed naturally as we nibbled on appetizers, turning towards his recent life revelations and his fiancé, Joshua Ross, a key player in his transformation.

Rohrer recounted with emotion what it was like coming out—to his former Cowboys teammates, his ex-wife, and his circle in Los Angeles. His voice shook with emotion as he spoke about their warmth and acceptance. "The kindness from my friends and family," he said, voice wavering, "is just incredible. They love me just as I am; nothing has changed." His eyes teared up, revealing just how healing this process had been.

A life-altering meeting in West Hollywood

One pivotal moment in Rohrer's life unfolded in a bustling West Hollywood gay bar. He'd intended just a quick stop, hoping just long enough until rush hour passed, but he met Joshua and everything changed. "I always knew where it was going," Jeff confessed. Despite living with his ex-wife and his commitments in entertainment, Ross was never far from his mind.

Challenging stereotypes: Rohrer in pro football

Jeff Rohrer's journey toward accepting himself wasn't simple, complicated by his years in professional football. As a Cowboy in those 1980s, he thrived in an environment where conversations around being gay were rare. Yet, when he eventually came out, his former teammates' acceptance surprised him. Reflecting on those football days, Jeff mused, "Football's a gladiator sport, and we don't usually link that with being gay. Yet, I don't remember anti-gay slurs in our locker room."

Finding new life with Joshua Ross

As Jeff nears his 60th birthday, he feels invigorated. His relationship with Joshua Ross breathes new life and a youthful spirit. "I feel like I'm 16," he chuckled, "like I've been born again." Even his friends and former teammates have noticed these changes, both inside and out.

Their Southern California wedding marked more than a celebration; it was a testament. Rohrer's gradual journey in coming out publicly was driven by a longing, a need, really, an urge, his desire authentic life. His marriage announcement through invitations (to hundreds!) became his personal coming-out statement. "People were floored," Rohrer laughed. "I guess I was a really good actor all those years."

Jeff Rohrer: LGBTQ+ advocacy and beyond

Now an accomplished commercial producer in Los Angeles, Rohrer uses his platform and voice championing LGBTQ+ acceptance. He hopes his story inspires and makes cultural waves, especially in sports where homophobia lingers. These days, Jeff stands tall and proud, surrounded by a network that loves and supports him. "I'm not going change things overnight," he says, "but I hope I'm pushing things forward, even just a bit."

Marking a decade filled with love

By March 2025, Rohrer and Ross will celebrate a decade together, a love that only continues growing. Jeff Rohrer's story isn't just personal; it's a powerful testament, proof even, love's power, and living one true life.
