Rutger published: A Chosen Mother's Love: How One Woman's Presence Empowered My Queer Journey

the essence and heartwarming reality behind motherhood in queer lives

In our vibrant queer community, motherhood means so much more than traditional gender roles or biology. It's about a steadfast commitment and a nurturing presence that transcends any norm. A mother stands by us, not out obligation, but because she chooses us, even when society tries its best diminish our spirit. More than just a title, it's a tribute those who make our lives possible and meaningful.

discovering family and finding my strength

Over ten years ago, I was lucky enough meet an extraordinary person, someone I affectionately call Auntie Maggie. Her name reflects her nurturing spirit and admiration Maggie Roche from The Roches. Auntie Maggie volunteered at a community center supporting LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. For many, like me, this place became a safe haven while figuring out where we fit in.

In my younger days, Auntie Maggie's presence was comforting. Her sharp wit, infectious laugh, and endless storytelling kept us all spellbound. She offered a refuge that felt like home, a feeling I'd yearned. Despite never claiming 'mother' as her title, her every action spoke volumes. She was always there, not seeking praise, but because she knew that feeling alone was something no one should endure.

the bonds that hold us and lessons that guide us

The connection with Auntie Maggie goes beyond words or regular chat. It feels like there's an unspoken understanding between us. She seems know exactly when I need a little pick-me-up, whether through a meme, a joke, or just a comment on how our queer experiences differ from straight ones. Her small gestures remind me I'm never truly alone.

Auntie Maggie's stories, full humor and wisdom, are priceless. She talks about legendary figures like Vonda, a fire-loving drag queen, and shares candid tales her own struggles, teaching resilience and survival. Her go-to advice, like "Plan your work, and work your plan," has helped me tackle countless challenges. Her journey's testament persistence; she went back school in her 40s, got her English degree, and pursued teaching.

going beyond conventional motherhood

To me, Auntie Maggie embodies what Audra Lorde described—a queer mother warrior poet. While she and Lorde are quite different, they share that essence being a mother: a constant practice committed presence. Without biological children, Auntie Maggie's impact on lives, mine included, has been profound and lasting.

Her actions radiate a mother's love—choosing stay, offer support, and find humor even in survival. She's fortified my journey self-discovery and empowered my identity. This story, framed as a Mother's Day tribute, celebrates mothers nurture beyond traditional expectations. It's salute those who show up without expectations, build strength with humor and insight, and recognize our worth when we struggle see it ourselves.

I honor Auntie Maggie every day, not just on Mother's Day, acknowledging profound ways she's shaped who I am. Her untitled love and guidance continue inspire and sustain me as I navigate my life's path.
