Rutger published: 5 Uplifting Films About Queer Families

Finding films that delve into the lives of LGBTQ+ families can be somewhat challenging. Much of queer cinema has traditionally focused on coming out stories, romances, comedies, and biopics of significant historical figures. Often, when family is involved in these narratives, it revolves around a queer character's relationship with their family of origin, touching on themes of acceptance or rejection by their straight relatives, or the creation of chosen families among friends.

This focus is understandable, as queer couples have long navigated diverse routes to forming families and raising children. However, only in recent years have the battles for marriage equality and adoption rights broadened the collective LGBTQ+ vision of family life as a hopeful and attainable goal.

Film, by its nature, tends to lag behind societal changes. The relative scarcity of LGBTQ+ centered stories means that mainstream audiences are often only exposed to more sensational narratives. Yet, uplifting, heartwarming films about queer families are out there, showcasing the myriad possibilities of LGBTQ+ familial life.

The Kids Are All Right

Lisa Cholodenko’s 2010 film, The Kids Are All Right, is a brilliant mix of heartfelt moments and humor. The story follows teenagers Joni and Laser, portrayed by Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson, who are the children of a lesbian couple, Nic and Jules, played by Annette Bening and Julianne Moore. The plot unfolds as they search for and establish a relationship with their biological father, Paul, brought to life by Mark Ruffalo.

This film was celebrated with two Golden Globe awards and four Academy Award nominations, highlighting its impact and resonance in portraying the dynamics of a modern, queer family.

The Birdcage

A classic piece within gay cinema, The Birdcage from 1996, is often remembered for the stellar performances of Robin Williams and Nathan Lane. They portray a loving but often bickering middle-aged gay couple. Supporting actors Dianne Wiest, Christine Baranski, and the late Gene Hackman deliver pitch-perfect comedic performances. The film, penned by Elaine May and directed by Mike Nichols, is a humorous ride but also includes touching moments that showcase the lengths to which a queer couple will go for their son.

Our Son

Bill Oliver’s 2023 film Our Son brings to light the challenges of parenthood and relationships. The story introduces us to Nicky and Gabriel, a married gay couple played by Luke Evans and Billy Porter, whose marriage is unraveling. This heartfelt narrative explores their divorce and custody battle over their son Owen, deftly balancing humor and sincerity.

Housekeeping for Beginners

In Macedonian-Australian director Goran Stolevski’s third feature, Housekeeping for Beginners, an unexpected family forms. After the death of her partner, Dita, played by Anamaria Marinca, takes on the responsibility of raising her partner’s two children. With the support of a middle-aged gay housemate, Toni, portrayed by Vladimir Tintor, and his young lover, Samson Selim, they create a unique family dynamic. The film won the Queer Lion award at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival and was submitted as Macedonia's entry for the Best International Feature Oscar.

Ideal Home

Director Andrew Fleming brings us Ideal Home, a 2018 comedy that takes a lighter approach to the topic of queer families. The film stars Steve Coogan as flamboyant celebrity chef Erasmus Brumble, whose life with his partner Paul, played by Paul Rudd, is upended when they must care for Erasmus's 10-year-old grandson. With a vibe reminiscent of a bro-comedy mixed with Absolutely Fabulous, this film offers plenty of laughs while still providing meaningful commentary on family life.

These films, diverse in their depiction of queer families, provide insight and entertainment, reflecting the varied and rich experiences of LGBTQ+ family life. Whether through comedy, drama, or heartfelt narratives, they invite audiences to celebrate the different forms love and family can take.
